S   l   o   w      f   a   s   h   i   o   n . What is it? Well, slow fashion does exactly what it says on the tin – it’s style, slowed down.

It’s all about considering every aspect of the supply chain, (animals, the environment and people) while creating quality garments. It’s basically the best thing to happen in fashion since Coco Channel introduced the world to her ‘Little Black Dress’. So, you can see why the slow fashion movement is turning heads. If you haven’t yet jumped on board, you’re missing a serious style trick – not to mention some feel good vibes. You see, way-back-when ‘going to work’ meant lifting heavy objects, herding plough animals and getting sweaty – versus maybe grabbing a coffee and firing up your laptop – clothes were designed to be durable and last ages. It. Just. Made. Sense.

Times changed, technology evolved (hurrah!) but now fashion has started to go full circle – and a virtuous circle at that. Designers and makers, especially the smaller ones, have allowed us to rediscover the value of buying once and buying well.

Why is this important? According to Sustainability Victoria, every second, the equivalent of a rubbish truck load of clothes is burnt or buried in landfill. That’s a pretty crazy stat and a pretty crazy amount of waste.

So, what to do? Rather than treating clothes as disposable items, slow fashion is centred on garments and items that are designed to be loved season after season, as opposed to one hit wonders. Fewer, better styles, made in smaller runs or even made-to-order to reduce energy and water expenditure in the production of fashion. Sold in smaller, local stores rather than huge chain enterprises.

That’s what ‘shopping small’ is all about. Because whilst many of the big fashion players are going greener, right now it’s the smaller makers and retailers - many of whom are passionate owner-creators - who are able to walk the talk.

From unique choices, to the vibe, to great service, ‘shopping small’ just hits different.

Also a plus? When your mates zagged, you zigged towards a cool, small retailer and scored some truly fresh fits and individual wears. Because let’s be honest - it’ll feel pretty good wearing those envy-inducing, unique pieces at next Friday’s drinks.

So, in celebration of small brands and supporting small, we’ve rounded up some of the coolest, freshest labels with wears that you’ll want to *add to cart* immediately. Plus, with all of these brands, you can pay it in 4 with Afterpay.
