In the weeks leading up to Mother’s Day, we often see certain product categories that Moms love experience significant increases in sales. According to the <a href="https://nrf.com/topics/holiday-and-seasonal-trends/mothers-day" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 71, 178);">National Retail Federation</a>, shoppers planned to spend an average of $220.48 in anticipation of Mother’s Day, an increase of $15.74 over 2020. The NRF also cited greeting cards, jewelry, flowers, and electronic devices as key product categories.This Mother’s Day is a great opportunity to put your business in front of customers in search of that extra special gift for Mom. We’ve put together some tips and tricks to help you have your biggest Mother’s Day yet.

1. Know your audienceRather than promoting sitewide, now is a great time to look at which products are most relevant for Mother’s Day and put them front and center. Adding a homepage banner to your website, creating a dedicated page for Mother’s Day products, or displaying top-selling gifts for Mom on your homepage are all great ways to connect with shoppers. Clearly signaling to your customers that you have the exact categories of products they’re looking for will improve the shopping experience and hopefully your conversions too!2. Promote for growthShoppers are always looking for a bargain, but you can make your promotions work for you! Why not offer a discount when customers reach a certain basket size, such as “$20 off for every $150 you spend.” Alternatively, consider pursuing offers that incentivize shoppers to increase the number of items in-cart, such as “Buy 2+ items and get 20% off”. By running promotions that emphasize bigger basket sizes and higher-margin products, you’ll deliver value to the customer without damaging your bottom-line.

3. Utilize social channelsCustomers depend on social media for gift ideas, and that’s where your business should be! At Afterpay, we believe New York Fashion Week (NYFW) should be for everyone. In September, we brought NYFW to the consumer through activations all across NYC, and this February, we brought NYFW coast-to-coast with activations in New York and Los Angeles. That’s why we’ve partnered with the organizers behind NYFW for the past two seasons to bring the experience to more consumers.&nbsp;﻿Last September, we brought NYFW to shoppers with activations throughout NYC, and for February’s Fall/Winter 2022 edition, we went bi-coastal with activations in NYC and Los Angeles. We also followed the trends, conversations, and purchasing behavior surrounding NYFW closely - helping retailers, designers, and other industry players better understand what’s in this season.&nbsp;Utilizing data from Afterpay shoppers and insights from our in-house consumer shopping&nbsp;psychologist, Shakaila Forbes-Bell, we unearthed five core insights that will shape the fashion landscape in 2022. 1. Illuminating Emerging TalentThe biggest stars at NYFW were small businesses. While major global fashion houses continue to have a major presence across NYFW events, emerging talent, diverse owners, and small luxury designers are taking a greater share of the spotlight–and we are here for it. At NYFW, this increased interest in small, diverse designers and businesses reflected growing consumer interest to support these brands in 2022. This trend is reflected in the market too. Since the start of 2021, the number of designer merchants featured on the Afterpay Shopping App has increased 70%, as more upscale labels seek to make luxury goods affordable and accessible to more consumers. Additionally, we’ve welcomed more than 24% more Black-owned businesses to the app over the same period, and last holiday shopping season more than half a million of our customers supported Black and female-owned businesses.&nbsp;2. Introducing “Wearapy”That’s clothing + therapy, and it’s a movement that has grown in recent months as people dress to showcase “more of their moods, memories, and selves,” says Forbes-Bell. Using fashion as a conduit for how the wearer feels, shoppers are practicing “wearapy” in two key ways. Creative layering evokes a sense of competence while giving the wearer more control over their outward image. Taken a step further, layering can combine “non-traditional or even clashing pieces and accessories to create a unique look,” says Forbes-Bell. A second trend embraces a maximalist trend to minimalism. Think cozy basics with loud prints, bold patterns, or interesting shapes to showcase personality without sacrificing comfort.3. Celebrating EveryBODYWear what you want, when you want. That’s the ethos behind gender fluid clothing and a recent spike in “sexy” clothing. While those two trends may seem incongruous, they’re both driven by a surge in body positivity. Consumers are purchasing low-cut denim and apparel with revealing cut-outs to celebrate the body in its natural state. This has been reflected in shopping trends, with a 34% increase since January in purchases of clothing with cutouts. Meanwhile, more designers are debuting unisex lines – with sales for unisex items up 154% year-over-year – or mixing and matching traditionally male and female pieces into fluid ensembles. Plus, merchants offering a gender inclusive category on Afterpay have increased 26% year-over-year. Research shows that such “non-conformist” dress styles can make the wearer appear more competent, and of a higher status.4. Embracing Form and FunctionFunctional fashion is on the rise, and it’s getting more stylish too. Think bucket hats, trail leggings, vests, and hip packs or slings. Sales of bucket hats alone were up 44% since last summer, as wearers opt for fashionable protective accessories while getting out and about. This trend is also driven by rising consumer interest in <a href="https://www.afterpay.com/en-AU/business/access/exploring-sustainability/small-business-sustainability" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">sustainability</a>, causing shoppers to seek out functional basics that will stand the test of time or serve double-duty to reduce excess consumption. These items don’t have to lack in style though, with collaborations like Gucci x Northface that allow consumers to take high fashion from the runway to the trails.5. Getting NostalgicWhether it’s ‘70s-era streetwear or mid-‘90s denim, consumers are revisiting nostalgic styles. There’s a reason for this, and it’s not just those Y2K TV show reboots. Studies show events like the pandemic give people a distorted sense of time, which has spurred interest in decade-blending styles. Purchases of low-rise jeans, for example, were up 115% in the month leading up to NYFW, and we expect this trend to bubble up in SS23 shows later this year (thanks, in part, to Bella Hadid!). Another body-positive staple is back too. Sales of the micro mini skirt were up 24% since last fashion season. Finally, streetwear is here to stay, despite some designers speculating that the look is on the way out. Consumers continue to gravitate toward streetwear brands and styles, including the aforementioned unisex category. When <a href="https://mytopicals.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Topicals Skincare</a> founder Olamide Olowe launched her beauty brand, which is aimed at people with chronic skincare conditions, one of the first steps she took was partnering with Afterpay.Why? It’s an expected payment method among Gen Z and Millennials, says Olowe - who is herself just 24. “At this point, if you don’t have Buy Now Pay Later, it’s [comparable to] not having credit card processing, back in the day.”

Olowe adds that Afterpay is especially important for emerging and indie brands, as it eases the path to purchase and makes it easier for Gen Z and Millennials to test new brands. “As a business owner, you’re always trying to [convince customers to shop with you for the first time] to get that first sale.

It takes a lot to win over Gen Z. But skincare brand Topicals, aimed at chronic skin conditions, has done exactly that with an inclusive, innovative approach.

When Olamide Olowe decided to launch a skincare brand aimed at chronic skin conditions, like eczema and hyperpigmentation, she was met with plenty of scepticism.“I had a lot of people saying, ‘How are you going to make chronic skincare cool? [People would say] ‘People don’t want to talk about this. It’s really shameful.”

A few short years later, Olowe and <a href="https://mytopicals.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;">Topicals</a>, the brand she co-founded, has definitively proved her critics wrong. Topicals has raised more than $2m in funding, and in March 2021 it launched in Sephora – and promptly sold out in 48 hours. Meanwhile, Olowe herself was recently included in Forbes 30 Under 30 list for retail and e-commerce.&nbsp;Olowe also features in Afterpay’s Make it your way series, which celebrates business owners who are forging their own path and building innovative businesses that reflect their personal values and passions.<h2>Make it expert</h2>The concept for Topicals was inspired by Olowe’s own personal experiences. Growing up, the 24 year old struggled with skin conditions including boils and in-grown hairs. “I vividly remember being so embarrassed and not wanting to put on a swimsuit in summer,” she recalls. “It was very painful and very visible."

From, the outset she was determined to make a difference to anyone struggling with skin conditions and only use ingredients that were scientifically proven.<h2>Make it compassionate</h2>Not only that, but Topicals aims to transform the way people feel about their skin through mental health advocacy.“A lot of times, with skin conditions, you’re not just managing the discomfort that comes with the skin condition…but also sometimes having to deal with the shame or the embarrassment [that goes with it].

“I grew up thinking that there was such a thing as “perfect” skin,” adds Olowe, who is passionate about changing the narrative around skin and partnering with mental health organisations. “We’ve donated around $50,000 to mental health organizations so far.”&nbsp;<h2>Make it courageous</h2>As a young African-American woman, Olowe is conscious that she faced challenges that other entrepreneurs haven’t had to deal with. “For example, raising capital was very difficult– investing is really about who you know, and if you don’t have access to networks, people aren’t as inviting. So, getting the capital and resources can take a little bit longer and it can be a little bit harder to get.”

She is also passionate about reaching under-served communities. “We’re a very <a href="https://www.afterpay.com/en-AU/business/access/marketing/customer-centricity" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">customer and community centric</a>-driven brand. We spend a lot of time listening to our customers.”<h2>Make it with Afterpay</h2>Those customers tend to be Gen Z and Millennial beauty lovers – the so-called “Skin-tellectuals” who, have grown up on the internet and who are famously savvy about beauty products and their ingredients.Olowe believes that buy-now-pay-later services are critical for reaching younger consumers, and she and Topicals partnered with Afterpay early on. “Not having Buy Now Pay Later, is [similar to] not having credit card processing, back in the day.”

As a business owner, she says that Afterpay is important for new and indie brands. “As a business owner, you’re always trying to get customers to make that first purchase – and shop with you for the first time – and Afterpay helps with that because [it lowers the barriers to entry and] customers can break up payments.”&nbsp;

For a brand like Topicals, which places a premium on inclusivity and accessibility, offering a platform like Afterpay to make products more accessible was a natural fit.&nbsp;“To know that so many people I’ve never met are now using [our] products and getting results from it… for any entrepreneur, that’s your fuel.

Hollywood’s favourite hatmaker Gladys Tamez Millinery partners with Afterpay to make her products accessible to new customers.

You might not know her name, but you’re probably familiar with <a href="https://gladystamez.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;">Gladys Tamez</a>’ work. Her hats have adorned the heads of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, from Lady Gaga to Cher and Johnny Depp.Tamez partnered with Afterpay to make her handcrafted, artisanal hats more accessible to a wider audience.“We took on Afterpay because we had all these young girls coming in here and saying, “Do you have Afterpay?” And it’s been really good for us,” she says, noting that Afterpay’s Shop Directory drives traffic to her website every month.&nbsp;

Gladys Tamez is famous for her distinctive, sculptural hats, which are loved by A-listers.

As a child growing up in Mexico, <a href="https://gladystamez.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;">Gladys Tamez </a>pored over fashion magazines. Several decades later, the milliner, who has been dubbed Hollywood’s favourite hatmaker, frequently appears in the pages of the very magazines she once collected.“I feel so lucky that today I can do what I love and enjoy every day,” she says.

What Tamez loves most is creating distinctive, sculptural hats. From her atelier and shop in downtown Los Angeles, Tamez has produced hats for everyone from Johnny Depp to Cher and Lady Gaga, who famously wore a pink Gladys Tamez hat on the cover of her 2016 album, Joanne.

“To me a hat is a sculpture. It’s an art form, that’s how I see it,” says Tamez.This month, Tamez features in Afterpay’s Make It Your Way series, which celebrates small business owners around the world who are carving their own path and creating businesses that reflect their personal values and passions.<h2>Make it handcrafted</h2>Tamez’ love of hats began in 2009 when she travelled to Spain and witnessed a fourth-generation hat designer craft a bolero hat. “I loved the process – the magic of how they made it,” she recalls.

When she returned to LA, Tamez sought out classes and honed her talents, using traditional, handcrafted techniques. “My hats are made with blocks,” she explains. “I have 1500 blocks from [as far back as] the 1920s….”

A Gladys Tamez hat can take up to eight hours to make, and her work is known for its distinctive creases. “I do Western hats, I do cowboy hats… but I always want to do a modernized hat. I don’t want my clients to look like they’re in costume.”&nbsp;<h2>Make it personal</h2>Over the years, Tamez’ client base has grown to encompass celebrities, fashion lovers and customers from all around the world. “I have all kinds of customers – from 18 to 84. I have some clients who are fashionistas and super-confident… and other clients who come to me and they’ve never worn a hat before."

Whoever the client, Tamez takes a personal approach to her work. “At the beginning, I sit down and I ask them, ‘What colours will match with you?’ ‘What face shape do you have?’ And we start working together… I have some clients who now have 13 hats.”&nbsp;“I think hats [can be] a superpower. When clients wear them, they start noticing how hats compliment their look. And then other people start noticing and telling them how great they look – and then they don’t want to take the hat off!&nbsp;<h2>Make it with Afterpay</h2>The designer partnered with Afterpay after younger customers started asking for a buy-now-pay-later platform. “We had all these young girls coming in here and saying, ‘Do you have Afterpay?”

“And it’s been really good for us,” continues Tamez, who views Afterpay as a tool to ensure her luxury products are available to a wider audience. “I want more people to see and appreciate these hats made by hand with the old techniques. I want to preserve those techniques and give them the respect it deserves.”
