Gifting, Transformed: Q&A with BOXFOX

BOXFOX is a gift box company with a powerful mission to create stronger relationships through personal gifts. Founded in 2014 by Chelsea Moore, Jenni Olivero, and Sabena Suri, BOXFOX makes the personalized gifting experience simple and meaningful. To talk about this women-founded company’s genesis and growth, we spoke with Co-founder and CEO Chelsea Moore.

Afterpay: BOXFOX has a moving origin story. Tell us about how the idea turned into a business following the illness of a close friend. 

BOXFOX: After college, a close friend got sick and we realized the lack of options for being “there” for her when we couldn't be physically. We wanted something that went beyond flowers and the typical overpriced (and wasteful) gift basket. Our standards were high: we wanted something presentable, personal, and with a purposeful product that was simple to send. As we explored this need, we discovered that others wanted a modern and seamless gifting experience, too. It didn't exist, so we built it.

Afterpay: Customer-centricity has always been a key tenet of BOXFOX. How did you build an eCommerce company around the customer, and what are some of the ways you’ve used digital platforms and tools to evolve without losing that personal touch? 

BOXFOX: We believe in personalization and authenticity at scale. It really is about building in a high-touch level or service from the beginning so that it can grow with your team and is the standard from the get go. We pride ourselves on our thorough, helpful and accessible customer experience team and leverage tools that help our team connect quickly, but deeply with each and every customer. 

Afterpay: As a female-founded, industry-disruptive business, you must have faced hurdles. What were some of the biggest learnings from growing the company and brand? You’ve talked about responsible growth--what does that look like for BOXFOX? 

BOXFOX: There have been challenges of course, but we are grateful for every hurdle because it has made us a stronger team and company! The past year, with COVID, we learned so much about being adaptable and creative in the face of uncontrollable obstacles and transparent and over communicative with our customers. As we grow, it will continue to be so important to prioritize the needs of our customers, our employees and our impact on the environment around us.

Afterpay: Part of customer empowerment is enabling people to pay flexibly. How has Afterpay helped customers send and share gifts, especially considering that some gifting occurs following unexpected life events? 

BOXFOX: Afterpay has been a key partner to help our customers give gifts when they want and even more so, when they need. We built BOXFOX to help our customers be there, even when they can’t physically be there. When we’re helping people support others for any reason, in any season, it is so important to have the flexibility to be thoughtful first, and pay later.
