Setting the record straight
Afterpay’s standard pay-in-4 BNPL product (“Pay-in-4”) is simple: users buy a product or service from an Afterpay merchant partner and pay for it over time in four installments. The first installment is paid generally at the time of purchase. The remaining installments are paid approximately every two weeks thereafter, for a total repayment period of approximately 6 weeks. For example, a consumer who makes a $100 purchase on January 1 will pay $25 at the time of purchase, and an additional $25 on January 15, January 29, and February 12. The aggregate installment payments are equal to the total sale price of the items being purchased (inclusive of any tax and shipping charges). Afterpay disburses funds to merchants directly on the customer’s behalf, and Afterpay is compensated by the merchant.
How does Afterpay work with merchants?
Afterpay’s principal revenue comes from merchants who pay a merchant transaction fee for Afterpay’s service. Merchants can partner with Afterpay by applying through Afterpay.com where they are required to provide basic information about themselves for review by the Company. Afterpay then conducts a number of due diligence and compliance checks before accepting a new merchant. For example, the Company conducts reviews of publicly available information, financial reviews, and business verification reviews (such as OFAC reviews) to ensure it is meeting its KYC/AML obligations.
Merchants who are accepted by Afterpay for Pay-in-4 enter into an agreement with the Company to become an integrated merchant, allowing them to incorporate Afterpay as a payment option at checkout. Afterpay contractually prohibits merchants from charging higher prices to Afterpay users or discriminating against this payment method.

MYTH
"Afterpay encourages overspending and consumer debt"
THE FACTS
Individualized Spending Limits: Every user has a personalized spending cap based on their payment history and responsible use patterns. These limits start conservatively and only increase with demonstrated consistent, on-time payments.
Real-Time Affordability Checks: Before approving any purchase, Afterpay conducts near instant assessments to ensure the consumer can afford the payments.
Average Transaction Size: The typical Afterpay purchase is $150—far from luxury spending. Most users leverage the service for everyday essentials and planned purchases.
High On-Time Payment Rate: Over 90% of Afterpay payments are made on time, demonstrating that users manage their obligations responsibly.
MYTH
"Afterpay is predatory lending that targets vulnerable consumers"
THE FACTS
Capped, Transparent Fees: Late fees are clearly disclosed, capped at $8 (depending on State law) and never compound. The maximum late fee is 25% of the original order value, and many users never incur any fees.
No Debt Trap: Afterpay pauses a user's ability to make new purchases if payments are missed, preventing debt accumulation.## Financial Hardship Support
Individualized Assistance: If customers face financial difficulties, Afterpay offers customized support plans that may include moving payment due dates, lowering payment amounts or extending repayment periods.
Diverse User Base: Afterpay users span all income levels and demographics. The service provides payment flexibility for planned purchases, not emergency borrowing.
MYTH
"Buy Now, Pay Later services operate without regulation"
THE FACTS
State Licensing: Afterpay holds lending licenses in states that require them and complies with all applicable federal and state lending and consumer protection laws.
Examinations and Audits: Afterpay is subject to regular regulatory examinations and audits.
MYTH
"Afterpay damages consumers' credit scores"
THE FACTS
Proprietary Credit Model: Afterpay uses a dynamic, behavior-based underwriting system that goes beyond traditional credit scores. This model leverages near real-time behavioral data for accurate creditworthiness assessment. Afterpay's model provides access to approximately 13% more creditworthy customers than traditional credit bureau scores alone would allow.
No Credit Bureau Reporting: Afterpay does not report payment activity to credit bureaus. This means on-time payments don't help traditional credit scores, but missed payments typically don't hurt them either.
No Hard Credit Checks: Afterpay does not perform hard credit inquiries that could impact credit scores when users sign up or make purchases.
Alternative to Credit Cards: Many consumers use Afterpay specifically to avoid taking on credit card debt or to manage purchases without impacting their credit utilization ratio.
Working with Credit Reporting Agencies: Currently, reporting BNPL loans would actually negatively impact a consumer’s credit score, as it does not take into account the nature of the short-term loan itself. Afterpay is currently working with others in industry and the credit reporting agencies to determine how best to report BNPL loans in a way that does not negatively impact the consumer’s credit score.
MYTH
"Consumers don’t know what they’re getting when they select Afterpay."
THE FACTS
Account Opening Disclosures: Customers are provided clarity during the account opening process. All terms and conditions are disclosed before the first purchase. Disclosure of all fees, payment dates, and the total amount owed.
Acknowledgement by consumers: Prior to any BNPL loan, Afterpay customers must acknowledge the understanding of the payment schedule. There is no obligation to the customer until they confirm acceptance of the terms.
Periodic Billing Statements: Afterpay customers receive regular statements showing all their transactions and payments.
Payment Schedule: Afterpay customers are provided with a clear disclosure of the upcoming payment dates when they initiate a BNPL loan and will receive multiple payment reminders before the due dates. Within the mobile app, customers have access to their payment history and the ability to make payments.
MYTH
"Hidden fees trap consumers in cycles of debt"
THE FACTS
Complete Transparency: All terms, including potential late fees, are clearly disclosed before a consumer completes a purchase. There are no hidden charges.
Capped Late Fees: Late fees are capped at 25% of the original order value and never compound. A vast majority of users never incur any late fees.
Payment Reminders: Afterpay sends multiple reminders before payments are due, helping consumers stay on track and avoid fees.
Account Suspension, Not Debt Spiral: If payments are missed, Afterpay suspends the account rather than allowing debt to accumulate. Users must resolve outstanding payments before making new purchases.
MYTH
"There are no consumer protections with Afterpay"
THE FACTS
Multiple Protection Layers: Afterpay imposes spending limits, affordability checks, transparent terms, and responsive customer support.
Dispute Resolution: Consumers can dispute charges and work with Afterpay's customer service team to resolve issues with merchants.
Refunds: Customer refunds are typically processed on the same day that Afterpay receives refund confirmation from the merchant.
Regulatory Oversight: Afterpay operates under state and federal consumer protection laws and cooperates with regulatory authorities.
MYTH
"Afterpay charges the merchants, not the customers - but then the merchants charge higher prices to the customers."
THE FACTS
Contractual Obligations: Accepted merchants sign an agreement with Afterpay that legally prohibits them from charging higher prices to Afterpay users or discriminating against this payment method.
Merchant-Funded Model: Merchants pay Afterpay a transaction fee for the service. Afterpay disburses funds to merchants on behalf of consumers — consumers pay zero fees or interest to Afterpay.
