My In-Store Afterpay Payment Was Declined

If your Afterpay payment was declined at a store, the cause is often different from online declines. Here are the most common reasons and how to fix them.

Common reasons for in-store declines

Your available to spend amount is too low In-store purchases use your available to spend amount just like online purchases. Check: Open Afterpay and view your available to spend. If the purchase exceeds it, you cannot complete the transaction.

Single-purchase limit Some accounts have a per-transaction limit that is lower than the total available to spend amount. Example: You may have $500 available to spend but a $300 single-purchase limit. A $400 purchase would be declined.

The merchant terminal is not compatible Not all in-store terminals support Afterpay. The terminal must support the Afterpay Card through a compatible digital wallet (Apple Pay or Google Pay).

Your Afterpay Card is not set up correctly The card may not be properly provisioned in your digital wallet. Your wallet may have defaulted to a different payment method.

You selected CREDIT instead of DEBIT At some terminals, you must select DEBIT (not CREDIT) when paying with the Afterpay Card. This is the most common fix for in-store declines.

How to fix it

Step 1: Check your available to spend amount Open Afterpay and confirm you have enough for the purchase.

Step 2: Try selecting DEBIT at the terminal If the terminal asks you to choose between debit and credit, always select DEBIT for Afterpay Card transactions.

Step 3: Force close and reopen the Afterpay app Close the app completely, then reopen it and re-authenticate if prompted. This refreshes your session and can resolve temporary issues.

Step 4: Remove and re-add the Afterpay Card to your wallet

  1. Open your digital wallet (Apple Wallet or Google Wallet).

  2. Remove the Afterpay Card.

  3. Open Afterpay and go to the Card section.

  4. Follow the prompts to re-add the card to your wallet.

  5. Try the purchase again.

Step 5: Try again After completing the steps above, attempt the purchase one more time.

If it still does not work

  • Ask the merchant if their terminal supports Afterpay or digital wallet payments.

  • Try a different payment method for this purchase.

  • Contact Afterpay support if you believe your account should be able to complete the transaction.

Note: If you pay with a different method, you cannot retroactively apply Afterpay to that purchase. Afterpay must be selected at the time of payment.
