6 style tips for a Mardi Gras look worth it’s own parade float

Only the fiercest of looks will do for the celebration all about being YOU.

By Ashleigh Allerton

Wondering why there seems to be a fabulous flare about the air right now? Well, you can thank the upcoming Mardi Gras Parade for that. Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade kicks off on March 5th, leaving us just enough time to pull together an ensemble of our best and brightest before the festivities roll in.

From the parade to the parties, there are plenty of opportunities to celebrate and feel your best self. With this years’ theme being United We Shine, an outfit that lives up to the task is a must. There’s no need to play it safe when it comes to your Mardi Gras looks; rather, it’s the chance to embrace all that’s bold and brave or wild and wacky. It’s the ultimate time to take your moment and stand out.

So, we’re here to help you piece together all you need for the shiniest, most colourful frock that your heart desires, from makeup and accessories to steal-the-show statement pieces. See below for our favourite fashion and beauty brands to shop this Mardi Gras, and a few of our personal picks just for you.

Neon

If we’re partying all night (or weekend) long, we can’t say no to the one-way ticket to ‘standout-ville’ that is all things neon. Whether you swing for the subtle touch of neon in your makeup or opt for the head-to-toe walking glowstick look, see below to get started.

Glitter and Sequins

Call us the Mardi Gras fashion police, because we can’t help but think it’s something of a crime to leave glitter or sequins out of your party look. It’s a right of passage, a gateway to the glittery glory that is a Mardi Gras celebration. Full sequin outfits are encouraged. Go forth and glitter up.

Shoulder Pads

Feeling bold? Of course you are, it’s Mardi Gras. Turn things up a notch and step out in some mighty shoulder pads. If turning heads was an Olympic sport, you’d be winning Gold.

Shoes

If we’re in the business of making a statement (we most definitely are), behold the power of the shoe! Sparkling cowboy boots? Metallic rainbow heels? Yes, and yes. The more outrageous the better, but we do suggest packing a few bandaids in case of any dance-induced blisters.

Accessories

Never overlook the importance of accessories when it comes to a Mardi Gras look. We would go so far as to say there’s no such thing as over-accessorising for this particular celebration.

Makeup

There’s no faster way to feeling fierce than your ultimate glam look. Nor is there a better time than Mardi Gras to experiment with colour, shapes and texture until your heart's content. We endorse the addition of body jewels to any look.

Happy Mardi Gras styling!
