Why was I charged at checkout? (Pay Monthly)

If you noticed a charge at checkout you weren’t expecting, here’s what it is.

Pay Monthly finances eligible items in your Apple cart, like an iPhone or MacBook. However, your cart may also contain items that aren’t financed, such as accessories, AppleCare, or shipping. These are charged to your linked debit card at checkout as pay in full items.

You may also see a down payment charged at checkout if your Pay Monthly available to spend doesn’t fully cover a financed item.

Both of these will show in your total due now at checkout before you confirm your order.

What gets charged at checkout

Your Apple cart can contain two types of items:

  • Financed items (e.g. iPhone, MacBook): these become Pay Monthly orders with a payment schedule.

  • Non-financed items (e.g. accessories, AppleCare, shipping): these are bundled into a single pay in full order, charged to your linked debit card at checkout.

If your cart has non-financed items, you’ll see them as a “pay in full” amount in your total due now.

Down payments

If your Pay Monthly available to spend doesn’t fully cover the items you’re financing, you may need to make a down payment at checkout. The down payment:

  • Is charged to your linked debit card at checkout.

  • Is capped at 30% of the most expensive item you’re financing (excluding shipping).

  • Goes toward the cost of the most expensive item you’re financing. The remaining amount becomes your Pay Monthly balance, paid in monthly instalments.

If your available to spend plus the maximum down payment still doesn’t cover the total cost of the items you’re financing, you’ll need to select a different payment method.

What you see at checkout

Your Afterpay payment summary splits your total into:

  • Total due now: pay in full items and any down payment, charged to your debit card

  • Total pay later: the amount you’ll pay over time across your Pay Monthly order/s

You’ll see both amounts and the applicable interest rate before you confirm.

Where to see your orders after checkout

In the My Afterpay tab (in the app or web portal):

  • Each Pay Monthly order is listed separately with its own payment schedule.

  • The pay in full order shows as a completed order.

  • You can view your total amount owed across all Pay Monthly orders.

Refunds on pay in full items

If you return an item that was part of your pay in full order, the refund goes directly back to your linked debit card. As Apple manages refunds, you’ll need to contact Apple directly at apple.com/au/shop/help/returns_refunds or by calling 133 622 for any refund related queries, including to raise a refund request.
