Styling activewear as part of our everyday outfits is a trend on the rise. Perhaps it’s because we’re investing more in comfort as we WFH, filling our wardrobes with buttery-soft leggings and loose-fitting sweaters (mmm, cosy), or maybe it’s because we’re hitting the gym with renewed motivation after lockdowns. Whatever your personal reason, activewear is now a place where fitness meets fashion!

There are new, trending activewear pieces that look just as good at the weights rack as they do at the cafe, the bar or the office. From bright, matching sets to one-pieces and Y2K fashion, these are four seriously hot activewear trends you’ll want to jump on (or walk leisurely towards) this season.

Dopamine dressing

Dopamine dressing has made its way to activewear, and we couldn’t be happier about it! Matching sets in bright, bold colours are on the rise, from monochrome leggings and crops to accessories that pair with your colourful sneakers.

Dopamine dressing is really about wearing outfits that make you feel happy, whether it’s all black or has all the colours of the rainbow on it. But to really up the dopamine dose, pick matching sets in warm colours like fiery oranges, deep purples and sunshine yellows. Then pair your fit with a matching sweater (great for when you’re travelling to or from your workout) or sneakers for a casual yet refined look.

Y2K fashion

It was inevitable: Y2K fashion has made its way to activewear. We’ve thought about it, processed some awkward teenage memories and now we’re ready to embrace it!

Activewear is actually one of the best styles for Y2K dressing. This trend is all about glossy materials, fluro colours or anything with a disco ball sheen. Asymmetrical crops, leggings with split hems (bonus points for a flared leg with a zipped split hem) and half-zips are also on trend right now.

Y2K activewear is perfect if you’re not a fan or skin-tight leggings or just want to stand out from your other fitness friends. And thanks to Gen Z on TikTok, wearing these pieces outside the gym makes you look like an It Girl on the cusp of super stardom.

Bodysuits and track suits

Bodysuits are everywhere on the streets of LA right now, and the one-piece trend is taking off in Australia. It’s an effortless workout look that gives you a lot of flexibility – and as daywear, it creates a retro chic aesthetic that can’t help but turn heads.

If you want to be among the stylish first adopters Down Under, experiment with full-length, cropped and romper styles to find the one that works for you. Or layer a bodysuit with loose-fitting shorts for a bit of extra coverage.

Tracksuits are more common for men (and they’re a great option for women and non-binary folks who prefer streetwear styles or something a little less shaped) but they give off the same retro, one-piece look. To make it ultra-stylish, pick a monochrome tracksuit with a high collar or a splash of colour on the sleeve.

Ribbed material

Activewear made with ribbed material is great for when your schedule’s packed and you don’t have time for multiple outfit changes. You’ll always look like you’ve dressed for the occasion when you rock up in a pair of ribbed leggings and a crop in a neutral shade, whether the occasion is a 6am yoga class, drinks with that cutie you’ve been on a few dates with or heading into the office to get shit done.

Although it’s stylish enough to wear on its own, you can pair the look with a blazer or some simple accessories. Then a luxury-leaning activewear outfit becomes a casual daywear staple that’ll make you look and feel as amazing as you are.
