What documents can I use to verify my identity/account?

If you don’t have a New Zealand Driver’s Licence, New Zealand Birth Certificate or New Zealand Passport, we accept alternative document based verification.

All documents provided must be certified as true and correct by an authorised trusted referee, within the last 3 months, with words to the following effect:

I, [full name of trusted referee], as [select appropriate person from authorised list below], certify that this [name of document] is a true copy of the original [signature and date].

Primary Photographic Identification Documents

• NZ certificate of identity issued under the Passports Act 1992 (i.e. NZ Passport)

• NZ certificate of identity issued under the Immigration Act 2009 (i.e. Refugee Travel Document)

• NZ Driver Licence Card issued by the New Zealand Transport Agency

• Foreign Passport containing name, date of birth and a photograph and signature of the person in whose name the document is issued, and is issued by a foreign government, the United Nations or an agency of the United Nations

Primary non-Photographic Identification Documents

• NZ full birth certificate

• Certificate of NZ citizenship issued under the Citizenship Act 1977 

• Citizenship certificate issued by a foreign government

• Birth certificate issued by a foreign government, the United Nations or an agency of the United Nations

Secondary Identification Documents

• 18+ Card also known as Kiwi Access Card

• NZ government issued letter/notice*

• Bank statement by a NZ registered bank*

• Statement from the Inland Revenue Department*

Address Documents

• NZ government issued letter/notice*

• Bank statement by a NZ registered bank*

• Statement from the Inland Revenue Department*

• Utility bill (power, gas, water, land-line phone or internet service provider)*

*The document must include your name and residential address, and the document must not be older than 12 months from the date of your Afterpay sign-up process.

Who is classified as an authorised trusted referee?

A trusted referee must be at least 16 years of age and sight the original documents. Approved and authorised trusted referees include the following:

  • Commonwealth representative (as defined in the Oaths and Declarations Act 1957) 

  • Member of the police 

  • Justice of the peace 

  • Registered medical doctor 

  • Kaumātua (as verified through a reputable source) 

  • Registered teacher 

  • Minister of religion 

  • Lawyer (as defined in the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006)

  • Notary public 

  • New Zealand Honorary consul 

  • Member of Parliament 

  • Chartered accountant (within the meaning of section 19 of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants Act 1996) 

  • A person who has the legal authority to take statutory declarations in New Zealand

A trustee cannot be

  • Related to you, for example a trusted referee cannot be your parent, child, brother, sister, aunt, uncle or cousin; or

  • Your spouse or partner; or

  • A person who lives at the same address as you.
