Afterpay lifts average order value by 70%
Afterpay customers have spent millions with Spudshed
Afterpay's Shop directory has sent 11,000 referrals to Spudshed
It’s been nearly 30 years since Tony Galati opened his first Spudshed. Since then, the business has expanded to 19 stores, thousands of hectares of crops and a deeply loyal customer base that stretches across Western Australia.
Yet one thing hasn’t changed: Galati’s fierce commitment to his customers – which is why he introduced Afterpay across all Spudshed stores.
“Everything we do is about our customers. We do whatever we can to assist them and make the shopping experience easier.”

“Everything we do is about our customers. We do whatever we can to assist them and make the shopping experience easier,” says Galati. Afterpay, he explains, lets shoppers spread their everyday spending over time, without the pressure of a large upfront payment.
What started as a way to enhance customer experience has become a tool to drive growth. Today, Afterpay lifts basket sizes, drives millions in sales and connects Spudshed with a new generation of shoppers.
“Offering Afterpay is win-win,” says Galati. “Customers want it and happy customers are good for business.”

Spudshed may have opened in 1998, but the story begins decades earlier. The Galati family has been growing fruit and vegetables since the ‘60s from a small market garden in Perth’s southern suburbs. Back then, Galati would help his parents in the garden before school.
Today, Spudshed remains proudly family run, with Galati’s children all part of the operation. The business serves around 250,000 customers every week.
What sets Spudshed apart is that most produce is grown in-house on farms, hothouses and fields across Western Australia. “We grow it, we pack it and we sell it,” says Galati. Owning the supply chain means that Spudshed can keep its prices down, he adds.
Spudshed has always been known for value. “Customers who shop with us are smart shoppers. They know that Spudshed offers value,” says Galati. “I know my prices, and, week in and week out, we are the cheapest by far.”
Afterpay makes Spudshed’s products even more accessible by enabling customers to pay over time, he says. “Rather than paying in one hit, they’re able to pay in four regular payments.”
Plus, paying with Afterpay means they avoid the high interest rates associated with credit cards, he adds.
Most Spudshed stores operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, making convenience one of the brand’s core values. Afterpay takes that convenience one step further by offering shoppers the flexibility to manage payments on their own terms, says Galati.
This is especially useful in Western Australia, where many miners are paid monthly. “Afterpay helps them manage their spending.”
“It’s about choice,” he adds.
When customers have flexibility they shop with confidence. Customers who pay with Afterpay spend 70 per cent more on average than those paying with other methods.
Since launching with Afterpay, Spudshed customers have purchased millions of dollars worth of products.
“Afterpay is simple, straightforward, convenient and a great service for our customers.”

Spudshed is a household name in Western Australia. But Afterpay helps extend that reach even further. Over the past year alone, the Afterpay Shop Directory has sent 11,000 referrals to Spudshed’s website.
“Afterpay is very easy and straightforward to use as a business. The team is good to work with, and the reporting is thorough as well. There is an online portal – the Afterpay Business Hub – that’s available for us to view the data daily,” says Galati.
He adds, “Afterpay is simple, straightforward, convenient and a great service for our customers.”
