Afterpay partners with Thread Together

To provide much-needed support to Aussies impacted by COVID-19

Afterpay is committed to its support of those in our community impacted by Covid-19 and the recent devastating bushfires, so is teaming up with local charity Thread Together to provide much-needed winter clothing apparel and footwear for Aussies doing it tough this season. Afterpay will become Thread Together’s principal partner as part of a long-term partnership.

Like Afterpay, Thread Together is an Australian start-up with strong roots in fashion and is the only organisation in Australia whose mission and focus is to source new clothing from fashion retailers and redistribute items to those in our communities that need it most.

In addition to providing free clothing to those who need it, the partnership will also work to assist retailers who are looking for a sustainable way to repurpose excess stock.

Hundreds of Australian fashion retailers donate excess stock to Thread Together, including brands and partners of Afterpay, such as THE ICONIC, Bec + Bridge, P.E. Nation, Under Armour, Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Bendon Lingerie and Retail Apparel Group. This has resulted in tonnes of new clothing being diverted from landfill to date and cemented Thread Together’s role as the highest ethical response to the textile waste problem in Australia.

How it works:

  • Fashion partners donate new end-of-line stock

  • Thread Together sorts, picks and packs the clothes for purpose

  • Clothing is sent to those in need with the support of a network of charity partners and social service agencies

All clothing donated to Thread Together is distributed to vulnerable Australians at no cost and Thread Together requires financial resources to provide their much needed services.

Afterpay will raise much needed funds ($1 per transaction) via its app/website when millions of active Australian customers checkout on its platform. As principal partner, Afterpay will ensure that Thread Together receives a minimum of $200,000 each year.

Anthony Eisen, CEO and co-founder is determined Afterpay does its bit to support Aussies in need and provide a responsible solution to excess stock.

“We are thrilled by our partnership with Thread Together as it allows us to directly help Aussies who are impacted by Covid-19 and the recent bushfires who may be struggling to get the clothes they need for themselves or their families this winter. The partnership also provides help to our merchants by providing a sustainable solution for excess stock and helps the environment by preventing clothing from ending up as landfill.”

Anthony Chesler, CEO Thread Together notes: “More than 3 million people are experiencing vulnerability of basic human rights such as shelter, food and clothing. As a result of the pandemic, this number is rising with individuals, families and communities needing increased support. It has been an honour to work with so many local and global brands and redistribute clothing that would otherwise have gone to landfill to Australians in need. Today, Thread Together is providing brand-new clothes to approx. 1,500 people each week and we are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Afterpay whose support will enable us to further increase the number of people that we can help.”

Supporting the broader Australian Fashion Industry, Afterpay is also in the process of finalising a sponsorship agreement with the Australian Fashion Council (AFC), a non-profit membership organisation and peak industry body for Australia’s textile and fashion sector. The sponsorship will see much needed support for Australian designers and brands in their journey towards recovery and revival and will strengthen a number of AFC’s programs and initiatives in this space.

Speaking of the sponsorship, Anthony Eisen notes, “We are equally excited by our sponsorship of the AFC and the support we can provide to Australian fashion designers and brands to recover and strive post COVID-19. Australian fashion is in our DNA and we want to ensure we do everything possible to back our fellow Australians”.

Leila Naja Hibri, CEO, Australian Fashion Council added: “To date, the AFC have had a multi-phase approach to dealing with COVID-19; starting in mid-March with several initiatives aimed at helping the industry survive the initial crisis. We are now in the midst of executing the Recovery phase which will focus on giving the industry tools, including AFC Virtual and the Recovery Webinar Series that are directed at picking up the pieces and getting back into gear in preparation for Revival. This last phase will see us working with key stakeholders like Afterpay to help shape a thriving future for our industry. Together we will do this by establishing a “Disruptive Collaborative Collective” built on a “People and Planet First” ethos, founded on creativity, adaptability, innovation, sustainability and diversity.”

Afterpay is committed to supporting communities in which it operates, and it will be rolling out similar initiatives in the US, UK and NZ. To show support for Thread Together, customers simply buy any product via Afterpay and tick the $1 donation box at checkout.
