How can we help?

How can I verify my account?

Afterpay is committed to working with our community to promote responsible spending. Before you can use Afterpay in New Zealand, we need to confirm you are who you say you are, and that you are 18 years or older. To protect your privacy and security and comply with our local regulatory requirements, we need to verify your identity when you sign up to Afterpay. All personal information you provide in the verification process will be handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy here.

Step 1 - Check your details match your ID document

Go to My Afterpay to review the personal details on your account:

  • In the app: sign in, tap Account, then My Afterpay.

  • On the web: sign in, then select My Afterpay under the Account heading.

Why your details have to match exactly

Verification confirms that you are who you say you are. Our checks compare your details against your identity document, so your name and date of birth need to match it exactly - character for character. A small difference is enough to stop the check, and it's the most common reason a verification doesn't go through the first time.

Name formatting

Names come in many shapes, and our form has a first name and a last name field. Here is how to enter yours.

If your name is…

What to enter

Example

A given name and a surname

Enter your given name in the first name field and your surname in the last name field, exactly as printed on your document.

Document reads "John Smith". First name: John. Last name: Smith

A family name printed first

Do not reorder your name. Enter the family name in the last name field and the given name(s) in the first name field, matching the document.

Document reads "ZHANG Wei". First name: Wei. Last name: Zhang

A Māori or Pasifika name with macrons or diacritics

Enter the macrons exactly as printed. If your document shows a macron, include it; if it does not, leave it out — match the document, not your preference.

Document reads "Tāmati". First name: Tāmati

Hyphenated or multiple surnames

Enter all parts in the name field, including hyphens and spaces, exactly as printed.

Document reads "Te Rangi-Marama". Last name: Te Rangi-Marama

Longer than the field allows

Enter as much as fits, then contact us. Do not abbreviate or drop a name to make it fit — tell us and we will handle it manually.

-

Recently changed (marriage/divorce, deed poll, gender marker)

Enter the name on the document you are sending. If your document is not yet updated, send the old document plus your change-of-name evidence.

-

Middle names: only enter a middle name if your document includes your middle name.

Step 2 - Choose a document

We accept the following documents.

Primary documents

Document

What to send

New Zealand driver licence

A photo of the front and the back. It must be current - expired licences are not accepted.

New Zealand passport

The photo page, including the two lines of code at the bottom. It must be current - expired passports are not accepted.

Alternative documents

If you do not hold a current NZ driver licence or passport, we may request additional alternative documents to proceed. For more information regarding alternative document based verification click here, please reference this link.

What we do not accept

  • Expired documents of any kind.

  • Photocopies or screenshots of a document displayed on another screen.

  • Documents in someone else's name, including a partner's or parent's.

  • Community Services Cards, SuperGold Cards, student ID cards or club membership cards.

  • Overseas driver licences.

Photo checklist

Most rejections are related to photo quality, not the document itself. Before you send confirm:

  • All four corners of the document are inside the frame.

  • Every character is readable, including small print.

  • No glare across the photo or the text — turn the flash off and move away from direct light.

  • The document is flat, not curled, and not partly covered by your fingers.

  • The original document, photographed directly — not a photo of a screen.

  • Do not crop, rotate, filter or edit the image in any way.

Step 3 - Send your document

In the Afterpay app (fastest)

  1. Open the Afterpay app and tap Account.

  2. Tap My Afterpay. Your verification status is shown at the top.

  3. Tap Verify now, or provide more information via return email if we have already asked you for something.

  4. Provide either your New Zealand Driver License or Passport

  5. Take a photo of the document, or upload one from your camera roll. Send both sides where we ask for them.

  6. Check the preview is sharp and every corner is visible, then submit.

On the web

  1. Sign in at afterpay.com/en-NZ and select My Afterpay under the Account heading.

  2. Select Verify my identity and follow the prompts.

  3. If you cannot complete it there, use the secure upload form linked at the end of this page.

Successful Verification Outcome

Once your identity is verified, we will run a credit check to work out whether you are eligible for Afterpay and determine what your spending limit will be.

  • This check may be visible to other lenders and may impact your credit score.

  • Verifying your identity successfully does not guarantee you will be approved for Afterpay.
