2021 Winner
SPELL
The story began when two sisters joined each other in the idyllic beachside town of Byron Bay, Australia, to continue a journey they'd started together many moons ago, as children.
The sisters' designs allude to the dreams of their Latvian grandparents who fled war-torn Europe bound for America, but for a twist of fate ended up in a dusty refugee camp in Australia; to their hippie parents, a leather craftsman and potter, who in the 1970s hopped from town to town following their own wild dreams.
Most of all, Spell's flowing, feminine dresses, love of turquoise, florals and age-old lace, whisper to the sisters' own childhood. Spell taps into that sense of nostalgia, beauty and freedom that so compliments the female spirit. The vibrant, expressive part of you that emerges on vacation, or mid-strut at a festival, Spell brings that spirit to life, wherever you are.
The 2020 winner of Afterpay’s People Choice Award at the Australian Fashion Laureate, Macgraw, is an Australian fashion label founded and run by sister duo Beth and Tessa MacGraw. Launched in 2012, their womenswear label is beloved across the country for its unique approach to free-spirited and feminine fashion. They have long graced the pages of high-end fashion magazines, including Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, and been fan-favourites in their years showing at Australian Fashion Week.
This, and the abundance of esteemed awards won over the years, including The Australian Fashion Laureate for Best Emerging Designer, The Tiffany & Co. National Designer Award and The Regional International Woolmark Prize (IWP), has cemented the Macgraw brand as one of luxury and individuality, with no sacrifice of the playfulness in their designs that were so significant in their emergence. The People’s Choice Award celebrates the designers making new waves in the fashion industry, and the Macgraw brand has certainly carved its place in the design realm as they continue to take the industry by storm.
